Looking after a vacuum cleaner filter
Some filters are washable and others are not. The exact part identification matters more than the general label HEPA.

A dirty filter can restrict a vacuum cleaner's airflow, but water is not automatically the correct treatment. Identify the machine and the particular filter before cleaning it. The term HEPA alone does not tell you whether the part can be washed.
Many machines contain several filters or screens with different care instructions. A washable pre-filter and a non-washable exhaust filter cannot be treated alike. Find the manual using the model number and compare its illustration with the part you have removed.
Use only the intended method
Switch off and disconnect the machine as instructed. Remove the filter without forcing it. If dry cleaning is specified, follow the stated method and avoid damaging the pleats. Compressed air, stiff brushes or another powerful vacuum may be unsuitable for delicate filter material.
For explicitly washable filters, follow the required water temperature and rules about cleaning agents. Dyson specifies cold water and complete air drying for at least 24 hours on certain models, for example. That is a requirement for those products, not a universal rule for every filter. Other parts must not get wet at all.
Refit a washed filter only when completely dry. A dry exterior does not prove the material inside is dry. Do not shorten the process using an oven, microwave or another unapproved heat source. Plan cleaning for a time when the vacuum will not be needed before drying is complete.
If performance remains weak
Check correct seating and closed covers after reassembly. Poor suction can also result from a full bin, blocked airway or obstructed nozzle. Do not repeatedly wash the same filter without inspecting the other user-serviceable airflow paths described in the manual.
Damaged material, failed seals or a filter that remains clogged after permitted cleaning may require a suitable replacement. Buy by exact compatibility rather than approximate dimensions. A poorly fitting part cannot perform its job reliably.
After the first maintenance session, note how dirty the filter was under your own usage. A home with frequent fine dust may need a different routine from a rarely used machine. Follow both the instructions and observed condition without overlooking specified replacement or servicing requirements.
