Narrowing a camera's motion detection zones

A detection zone selects relevant activity; it is not automatically a privacy mask.

Narrowing a camera's motion detection zones

A camera reports every passing vehicle when only the route to the front door matters. A motion zone can focus detection on a selected area. First establish what the exact model's setting controls: detection, notifications and recording may be separate functions.

Areas outside the zone may still appear in the video. If the purpose is to exclude something from recording, use an explicitly supported privacy function or change the physical view. Do not confuse those two tasks.

Start with the actual approach

Inspect the live image and identify the normal route towards the door. Leave enough useful area to detect someone before they are already standing beside the button. A tiny zone around the doorbell can react too late even if it eliminates many unwanted alerts.

Exclude obvious distractions such as moving plants or an unnecessary road area where the controls allow. Change the zone first. Altering sensitivity, object recognition and notification schedules simultaneously makes the result difficult to interpret.

Ask an authorised person to walk the intended route several times at a normal pace. Check both the detected event and notification delivery. A saved clip without a push message and a push message without the required history are different outcomes.

Compare day and night

Repeat under ordinary evening lighting. Shadows, reflections and night mode may change behaviour. A successful daylight test is insufficient if the camera mainly serves a night-time purpose. Recheck after substantial plant growth or installation of another outside light.

If unwanted alerts continue, keep a few examples with times and apparent causes. This is more informative than simply reducing sensitivity to its minimum. A quiet alert list is not a success if important approaches are also missed.

Treat the feature as assistance, not a guarantee that every event will be detected. Keep the physical view appropriately limited and assess recording requirements for the location independently of the technical zone setting.
