Choosing a floor lamp for a sofa corner

Check the light, footprint and controls from the sofa before committing to a position.

Choosing a floor lamp for a sofa corner

A floor lamp can brighten a room indirectly or illuminate one reading position. An uplighter does not automatically perform the same job as an adjustable reading head. Decide whether the sofa corner needs background light, light on a book or both.

Mark the proposed footprint beside the sofa with paper. Open drawers, move the side table and walk along the normal route. A base that looks narrow in a photograph may occupy exactly the spot where people place their feet or put down a bag. With an arc lamp, include the reach of the arm as well.

Check three positions

Look at the lamp while sitting upright, reclining and standing beside the sofa. A shade may hide the source in one position but expose it directly in another. Account for different seated heights if several people use the corner. An adjustable head is useful only if its joint is easy to move and stays securely in place afterwards.

For reading, light must reach the pages without a strong shadow from your head or shoulder. A lamp behind the sofa may work well, but a high back cushion can obstruct it. Test with a real book rather than an empty seat. Glossy pages respond differently from matte paper.

For indirect illumination, the wall and ceiling contribute to the result. A pale surface reflects differently from dark paint or exposed timber. Compare the effect in the actual room where possible. A lumen figure describes the source's output, not the resulting brightness on every surface.

Small control details matter

A foot switch behind the sofa may be harder to reach than expected. A control on the stem or a simple compatible wireless button may suit the arrangement better. Everyday operation should not require moving the furniture each time.

Route the cable along a protected path to the socket. It should not cross a walking route or become trapped beneath the base. Place the lamp on a suitable stable surface and follow its assembly instructions. Adding improvised weights or extending the arm yourself is not a safe way to adapt an unsuitable design.

If the lamp combines background and reading light, try the separate controls. A usable combination can be easier to live with than one very bright source. What matters is how the lamp functions in this particular sofa corner, not just how attractive it looks standing on its own.
