Cleaning lamps and shades
Dust often needs no aggressive cleaner. Material and construction determine what further treatment is suitable.

Start by switching off, safely disconnecting the supply and allowing the lamp to cool. LED fittings can also have warm housings or electronics. For fixed lights, follow the instructions and do not open electrical compartments simply to reach dust.
Identify the material first. Painted metal, glass, paper and fabric do not tolerate the same treatment. Instructions for a smooth table lamp cannot automatically be applied to a glued textile shade. If documentation is missing, begin with the gentlest dry method and ask the manufacturer about more stubborn marks.
Remove dust carefully
A clean soft cloth or suitable soft brush can collect loose deposits. Avoid pressure, particularly on thin shades and covers. Support small removable parts so they cannot fall onto a hard surface. Avoid tools whose edges could scratch a delicate finish.
Fabric shades may permit dry cleaning methods, depending on their construction, but are not automatically washable. Water can cause staining, distortion or failed adhesive joints. Paper and folded shades are especially vulnerable. A quick rinse is therefore not a general solution.
Where damp cleaning is explicitly permitted, dampen the cloth rather than spraying the lamp. Keep liquid out of sockets, switches, charging ports and ventilation openings. Use only suitable cleaning products and dry the surface as directed. Strong solvents can damage coatings and plastics.
Reassemble and inspect
Removed parts must be completely dry and correctly secured before the lamp is used again. Check retaining rings and ensure a cover is not fitted at an angle. Do not alter heat clearances or replace missing fixings with improvised adhesive tape.
Use the opportunity to inspect the outside of the cable and plug. Cracks, damaged insulation or unusual discolouration are reasons to stop using the product and have it checked. Cleaning does not repair those faults.
High fittings require safe access. Do not balance on movable furniture to reach an awkward shade quickly. A workable maintenance plan accounts for accessibility as well as cleaning products. Gentle, regular dust removal is usually easier than dealing with deposits that have been left to build up.
