Cleaning a display without damaging it

The exact screen coating determines the method. Window cleaner is not a universal solution.

Cleaning a display without damaging it

A switched-off display often makes dust and fingerprints particularly visible. Before cleaning, read the exact model's care instructions. A glossy surface may have a delicate coating and should not be treated like ordinary window glass.

Switch off, disconnect as instructed and allow cooling where required. This makes marks easier to inspect and avoids accidental operation. Keep moisture away from ports and case openings.

Begin dry

Use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth where the instructions permit it. Check for hard particles first. A reused cloth containing grit can do more damage than the original dust. Wipe gently without strong pressure and keep the product securely supported.

On a large television, cleaning should not make the stand or bracket move substantially. Do not press a palm into the panel to tackle a stubborn mark. Rough paper towels and abrasive tools are not safe default choices either.

If slightly damp cleaning is allowed, dampen the cloth accordingly rather than spraying the display. Liquid can run towards the edge and enter the housing. Use only products approved for that particular surface.

Do not transfer another product's instructions

Apple's care guidance distinguishes between products and finishes. A method permitted there is not automatically approved for every television or monitor. Alcohol, solvents and glass cleaners may be unsuitable for a coating. Special surfaces may require a particular cloth.

If a mark remains after the approved gentle method, do not simply increase pressure or chemical strength. Ask the manufacturer about further treatment. Damaged coating can resemble dirt and will not be restored by harder cleaning.

Allow any permitted residual moisture to disappear before use. Inspect for streaks with the screen off, without repeatedly polishing every tiny trace. Occasional gentle care is preferable to frequent aggressive cleaning. Store the suitable cloth clean and separate from tools or household chemicals.
