Choosing a television stand that fits

Foot placement and stable support matter more than furniture that is approximately wide enough.

Choosing a television stand that fits

A television can be narrower than a cabinet yet still fit it unsafely. Foot position, depth, load capacity and required restraint are the important details. Compare dimensions with the actual stand attached, not only the screen diagonal.

Widely separated feet need their entire supporting area on the furniture. A small overhang is not a suitable solution. Check depth too: a stand projecting backwards may require more space than its front view suggests.

Assess load and stability together

The furniture's capacity must account for the television and other objects resting on it. A heavy screen on a weak top can be problematic even when the cabinet looks substantial. Follow both furniture and television specifications.

Check stability on the floor and any required anti-tip restraints. Children, pets and cable pulling are further reasons to reject makeshift placement. Restraints must suit the intended structure; arbitrary cords or adhesive do not replace them.

Do not stack loose boards beneath a television to create soundbar clearance. If additional height is needed, use an appropriate approved solution. The change must not create uncertainty about support or centre of gravity.

Consider the furniture in operation

From the seat, check screen height and the lower image edge. A soundbar must not obscure the picture or remote sensor. Leave room for plugs without pushing them against the wall.

Open or closed compartments need to suit the devices operating inside them. Receivers and consoles require their specified ventilation. An attractive closed cabinet can retain heat and block infrared commands. Test these conditions before permanently covering the rear.

Preserve access to sockets and connections. Replacing a device should not require lifting the television insecurely. Keep leads orderly and free from tension while allowing drawers and doors their full intended travel.

Finish by trying ordinary actions: power on, change source, open a drawer and reach accessories. Suitable furniture provides a stable, usable foundation for the whole setup, not merely an appealing front. Clarify uncertain dimensions or loading before putting the television in place.
